Gilan

Caspian forests and the flavours of Rasht

On the south-western Caspian coast, Gilan is a province of rain, Hyrcanian forest, rice fields and mountains. Timber houses, vivid markets, tea, Gilaki cuisine and historic ports shaped a culture intimately connected with water, humidity and maritime exchange. Gilan invites slow travel: to taste, wander and absorb seemingly endless green.

Masuleh

Masuleh climbs a mountainside in ochre tiers, with roofs that double as neighbours’ paths and courtyards and lanes often wrapped in mist. Its compact architecture is an ingenious response to steep ground and a wet climate; above all, however, it is a living town to be visited with respect for residents’ daily lives.

Anzali Lagoon

Beside the Caspian, Anzali Lagoon is a network of channels, reed beds and open water supporting migratory birds and aquatic plants, including its celebrated water lilies. Gentle boat journeys, fishing scenes and harbour light are compelling, but protection of this fragile ecosystem is essential.

Rudkhan Castle

In the forests of Fuman, Rudkhan Castle extends along a mountain ridge among mist and dense trees. Reached after a sustained climb, its stone-and-brick walls, towers and gates create an extraordinary union of defensive architecture and Hyrcanian nature.

Rasht Bazaar

Unlike many historic Iranian bazaars, much of Rasht’s market is open to the sky and woven into the city-centre streets. The colours of produce, aromas of smoked fish and local herbs, vendors’ calls and the rain turn it into a living theatre of Gilaki food and everyday life.

Asalem–Khalkhal Road

The Asalem–Khalkhal Road climbs from humid Caspian forests to the high meadows of Ardabil. Within a relatively short distance it passes through misty woodland, open pasture and winding mountain passes.
