Islands shaped by salt, mangroves and colour

Hormozgan in southern Iran guards the Strait of Hormuz, where the Persian Gulf meets the Sea of Oman. Islands, mangrove forests, salt mountains, old ports, and Bandari music and dress have created a maritime culture of extraordinary colour. It is a destination for geology, coastal life and histories shaped by sails and ocean routes.

Hormuz Rainbow Valley

In Hormuz Island’s Rainbow Valley, mineral layers colour the slopes and soil in red, yellow, white, violet and green. Changing daylight continually transforms the palette, creating a painterly landscape. Removing soil or stones damages this delicate phenomenon and should be strictly avoided.

Qeshm Stars Valley

Qeshm’s Stars Valley is one of the island’s most distinctive geological sites. Wind and rain have eroded soft sedimentary layers into pillars, narrow corridors and sharp-edged forms that change dramatically with the day’s light and shadow.

Hara Forests

In shallow waters between Qeshm and Iran’s southern coast, the Hara mangroves disappear partly at high tide and re-emerge as the water falls. Salt-tolerant trees and tidal channels shelter migratory birds, fish and turtles; quiet, wildlife-sensitive boating is the best way to experience them.

Hengam Island

Hengam is a small island south of Qeshm with rocky shores, clear water and fishing villages. Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, sometimes seen in the surrounding waters, are among its principal natural attractions.
