Alborz

Mountain roads on the capital’s doorstep

West of Tehran, Alborz stretches from the Karaj plain into mountain valleys and highlands. The Karaj–Chalus Road follows this changing landscape, while Karaj’s Soleymanieh Palace and Shah Abbas Bridge offer a closer look at the city’s past.

Taleghan Lake, orchard villages and the approach to Dizin make the province suited to short trips combining buildings and countryside. Pair Karaj’s historic sites with a day in Taleghan or the northern valleys.

Chalus Road

With tunnels, bridges and mountain bends, the Karaj–Chalus Road climbs from the Karaj River valley into the Alborz range. Completed in 1933, it was a major feat of road engineering for its time. Shifting light on the cliffs, roadside waterfalls and mountain villages make the journey itself part of the destination.
