Elamite cities and the waterways of Shushtar

Chogha Zanbil is an Elamite sacred city centred on a monumental stepped ziggurat. Inscribed bricks, temples and enclosing walls provide essential evidence for the religion and architecture of ancient Elam.
Susa is one of the world’s oldest urban centres, with archaeological layers extending from prehistory through the Elamite, Achaemenid, Parthian and Sasanian eras. The Palace of Darius, the ancient mounds and Susa Museum reveal the remarkable continuity of life on this site.
Flowing through Ahvaz, the Karun divides the city between eastern and western banks and forms the axis of its public life. The White Bridge, Iran’s first suspension bridge, has become the city’s emblem—especially at sunset, when its pale arches and the lights of Ahvaz are reflected in the river.
Shadegan Wetland is a vast complex of riverine, marsh and coastal habitats in Khuzestan. Reed beds, open water and the boat-based life of local communities support fish, water buffalo and migratory birds.
Arab communities in Khuzestan welcome guests with coffee served from a dallah pot. Among Bakhtiari communities, Shahnameh recitation at Nowruz and Yalda keeps traditions of storytelling part of social gatherings.
