Mashhad’s shrine and the world of Ferdowsi
In north-eastern Iran, Razavi Khorasan is a land where pilgrimage, poetry, history and everyday life meet. Mashhad, Ferdowsi’s tomb, monuments of the Afsharid era, lively bazaars and the ingenious structures of desert communities give the province a richly layered character. A journey here is an encounter with a living strand of Iranian culture—shaped by spirituality, hospitality and the enduring memory of the Silk Road.

In Tus, the Mausoleum of Ferdowsi pays stately tribute to the poet of the Shahnameh and a guardian of the Persian language. Designed by Houshang Seyhoun with inspiration from ancient Iranian architecture, the monument stands in a tranquil garden, accompanied by verses from the epic, a museum and a library.
In central Mashhad, the Naderi Garden Museum brings together the tomb of Nader Shah Afshar, Houshang Seyhoun’s modern architecture, a commanding equestrian statue and galleries devoted to the Afsharid era. Rough-hewn stone, geometric forms and military symbols give the memorial its powerful identity.
Kang is an old terraced village in the mountains west of Mashhad. Houses follow the steep slope, so the roof of one dwelling may serve as a passage or yard for the house above. Orchards, water channels and narrow lanes preserve its local character.
Torghabeh is a popular highland retreat west of Mashhad, known for its valleys, streams, orchards and recreation areas. Its cooler setting and strong local food culture make it one of Razavi Khorasan’s favourite destinations for short excursions.
