Azadi Tower
Tehran · IRAN DIGITAL WALL

Azadi Tower is worth examining as a design, beyond its role as a familiar Tehran symbol. Completed in 1971 and clad in pale stone, it draws motifs from Iran’s historic architecture into a modern structural language. That combination gives the monument its distinctive outline. Stand back to read the whole form, then look for the meeting of older references and twentieth-century design. As a counterpart to the city’s royal palaces and contemporary towers, Azadi adds another architectural period to a visit to the capital.
