At 4,811 metres, Sabalan presents several landscapes within one volcanic mountain. The summit crater holds a lake, while snow remains high on the mountain for much of the year. Lower down, thermal springs and the summer pastures of Shahsevan nomads bring water and pastoral life into the view. These contrasts are a reason to consider the mountain beyond a simple summit objective. Reaching the top demands preparation and expert guidance, and conditions must shape the plan. The lower slopes and high peak tell different parts of the same mountain story.
