Moving towards the shrine is part of the meaning of Sheikh Safi’s ensemble. Its seven stages and eight gateways express a Sufi spiritual journey through architecture, making the arrangement of space as significant as the decoration. Developed between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries, the UNESCO World Heritage complex also traces the emergence of Safavid art. Spend time with the relationship between ceremonial rooms, domes, inscriptions and tilework. Looking at the whole sequence, rather than isolating an attractive surface, reveals why this is both a place of devotion and an important architectural visit.
