Anzali is best understood as a connected wetland rather than a single stretch of water. Channels pass between reeds and open into broader pools, supporting aquatic plants, including the lagoon’s celebrated water lilies. Migratory birds also depend on this habitat, although neither flowering nor sightings should be assumed for every visit. A gentle boat journey gives time to notice these shifts in the landscape alongside fishing activity and harbour light. The visit gains meaning from recognising how much life the water supports, and from keeping disturbance to this fragile environment low.
