By the time you reach Rudkhan, the sustained uphill approach has already explained something about its location. The castle spreads along a ridge in Fuman’s forest, with stone-and-brick walls, towers and gates shaped by the mountain beneath them. Look at the relationship between these elements and the slope: the defensive ensemble makes sense as a whole, rather than as a collection of isolated ruins. Dense trees and possible mist alter what can be seen at a distance. This is a visit where the approach and the architecture belong to the same experience.
