Naqsh-e Jahan makes more sense when you cross its open space before entering a building. The Imam Mosque, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, Ali Qapu Palace and Qeysarieh portal face one another across the ceremonial heart of Safavid Isfahan. Then walk the surrounding arcades: the grand composition gives way to tile patterns, entrances and the closer scale of the bazaar. These changing viewpoints show how royal ceremony, commerce and public life were brought into one urban design. The UNESCO-listed ensemble is memorable both as a whole square and as a series of details discovered at walking pace.
