Imam Reza’s golden dome is one of Mashhad’s defining sights, but the shrine extends far beyond that familiar image. Broad courtyards and the adjoining Goharshad Mosque form a vast pilgrimage complex shaped over centuries. For many people arriving in Mashhad, this is the destination around which the entire journey turns. The dome draws the eye from a distance; nearer at hand, the courts and mosque give the visit room to unfold. Leave time for these different spaces, which together make the city’s religious centre more vivid than any single view could.
