Razavi Khorasan

Mashhad’s shrine and the world of Ferdowsi

In Razavi Khorasan, a journey can move between pilgrimage and poetry. Imam Reza’s shrine and Goharshad Mosque anchor Mashhad; Tus brings Ferdowsi into view, while Nishapur’s memorials to Khayyam and Attar open another literary route.

Binalood’s villages reduce the scale of the journey, with semi-arid landscapes changing the scene again. Gonabad’s Qasabeh qanat invites attention to water engineering, and Torbat-e Jam’s dotar music supplies a local voice. Choose the themes that matter most rather than treating the province as one continuous city itinerary.

Imam Reza Shrine

The golden dome marks the beginning rather than the whole of Imam Reza’s shrine. Courtyards and the adjoining Goharshad Mosque reveal the scale of a pilgrimage destination built into Mashhad over centuries.

Ferdowsi Mausoleum

Read the monument as well as the verses at Ferdowsi’s mausoleum in Tus. Ancient Iranian architectural inspiration, Houshang Seyhoun’s design and a garden setting turn a literary stop into an encounter with the public memory of the Shahnameh.

Naderi Garden

Rough stone and geometric forms give Naderi Garden a different voice within Mashhad. Nader Shah’s tomb, an equestrian statue and Afsharid galleries make this central memorial a stop for modern architecture as well as history.

Kang Village

A roof can become the next house’s yard or passage in Kang. West of Mashhad, this terraced village makes the steep slope legible through its homes, narrow lanes, orchards and water channels.

Torghabeh

Torghabeh makes a short excursion from Mashhad feel like a change of setting. Valleys, streams and orchards bring the highlands close, with a cooler atmosphere and local food giving a leisurely outing its focus.
