Naderi Garden adds a distinct memorial language to central Mashhad. Nader Shah Afshar’s tomb is set within Houshang Seyhoun’s modern architecture, accompanied by a commanding equestrian statue and galleries devoted to the Afsharid period. Rough-hewn stone, geometric shapes and military symbols carry much of the visual argument. Notice the surfaces as well as the relationship between the building and the sculpture. The attraction is not only the historical figure commemorated here, but the way a military story becomes a designed place of remembrance within the city.
