Look first at the silhouette of Kolah Farangi: its hexagonal lower form rises through stepped storeys to a conical crown. That upward movement gives the white building its distinctive character within Birjand. Dating from the late Zand and early Qajar periods, it combines mud, brick, lime and traditional mortar. A visit rewards attention to shape and construction rather than scale; compare the changing outlines as your eye moves upwards, then consider the materials behind the pale exterior in this arid setting.
