Ganjnameh
Hamadan · IRAN DIGITAL WALL

The inscriptions at Ganjnameh are inseparable from their mountain setting. Carved on Alvand’s slopes beside an ancient route and a waterfall, the twin texts of Darius and Xerxes appear in Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian. That use of three languages opens a way to consider how Achaemenid authority communicated its message. Look first at the placement of the writing on the rock, then at its relationship to the route and water. The historical and natural elements reinforce each other here: royal language survives within a landscape still defined by stone and flowing water.
