Bam is worth reading as both a defensive enclosure and a town. Walls and towers establish its outer shape, while lanes, houses and the governor’s quarter reveal the organisation of life inside. Earthen architecture connects these spaces, but the story extends beyond the fortifications to the oasis sustained by qanats. That dependence on water helps explain the settlement as a whole. The citadel and its wider cultural landscape form a UNESCO World Heritage property, giving the visit a context broader than the scale of the walls alone.
