Susa is a place to consider continuity rather than compress everything into one date. Among the world’s oldest urban centres, its archaeological layers reach from prehistory through the Elamite, Achaemenid, Parthian and Sasanian eras. The Palace of Darius, ancient mounds and Susa Museum provide different ways into that long sequence. Compare what architecture, the shape of the mounds and museum objects can each tell you. The visit becomes most useful when those forms of evidence are brought together, allowing the idea of a repeatedly changing city to take shape.
