Khuzestan

Elamite cities and the waterways of Shushtar

Water makes a useful thread through Khuzestan. At Shushtar, canals, bridge-dams and mills reveal the organisation of ancient engineering; in Ahvaz, the Karun shapes present-day urban life. Susa and the ziggurat of Chogha Zanbil take the journey further back into the world of ancient Elam.

Shadegan’s reed beds and the northern Zagros foothills provide contrasts with the hot southern plains. Riverfront walks and Ahvaz street food connect the geography with daily life. Autumn and winter are better suited to bringing archaeological sites and cities together in one provincial itinerary.

Chogha Zanbil

The stepped ziggurat draws the first glance at Chogha Zanbil; inscribed bricks, temples and enclosure walls reward the next. Together they make the sacred city a direct encounter with Elamite religious architecture.

Susa

Susa asks you to look through layers of time. Ancient mounds, the Palace of Darius and the museum connect a remarkably long urban life, reaching from prehistory through several of Iran’s major ancient periods.

Karun River

The Karun gives Ahvaz its organising line. Eastern and western banks frame the city around the water, while the White Bridge’s pale arches become especially expressive as sunset and city lights reflect in the river.

Shadegan Wetland

Reed beds and open water make Shadegan a landscape of connected habitats. Riverine, marsh and coastal environments meet here, alongside local boat-based life and habitat supporting fish, water buffalo and migratory birds.
