High on a difficult Alborz summit, Alamut’s ruined fortress stands above a sweeping mountain valley. The view is inseparable from its story: this was a stronghold closely associated with the medieval Nizari Ismailis, set on ground whose steepness still dominates the scene. The surviving remains sit within a far larger landscape of slopes and open distance. Travellers drawn to castles and mountain country will find both here, with history anchored firmly in the terrain. Allow the demanding setting to guide your planning, and leave time to take in the valley as well as the ruins.
