Zagros gorges and the traces of Seimareh

Image source · Wikimedia CommonsTaher Partow · CC BY-SA 4.0

Changes in elevation give Ilam its starting point: wooded western Zagros heights descend towards warmer plains. In the capital, Vali Castle and Falahati Palace introduce Qajar architecture; beyond it, Razianeh and Arghavan shift attention towards the shape of the land and its vegetation.

Seimareh’s ancient remains, Dehloran’s hot springs and Abdanan’s twin Siyahgav lakes provide reasons to continue through the province. Make room for raised-pattern kilims and Ehrami weaving as well. These textiles bring rural and nomadic skills into the journey, offering a tangible connection with local work alongside the landscapes and historic sites.

Razianeh Gorge

A narrow limestone passage makes erosion visible at Razianeh Gorge. High walls and a winding floor show how water has shaped Ilam’s semi-arid mountains over time, turning the relationship between rock and flow into the main attraction.

Arghavan Gorge

A brief flowering changes the character of this valley near Ilam. Pink and purple Judas-tree blossom sits against green slopes and oaks, while springs and a river give the spring landscape its quieter movement.

Chamalan Waterfall

Spring water gives Chamalan its changing shape. The seasonal waterfall runs down rocky slopes, drawing the eye towards Ilam’s oak woodland and open Zagros valleys as much as to the falling water itself.

Kabir Kuh

Kabir Kuh gives Ilam a long mountain horizon. Its limestone slopes and deep valleys invite a wider view of the Zagros, where seasonal vegetation and regional watersheds depend on the shape of the ridge.
