Badab-e Surt
Mazandaran · IRAN DIGITAL WALL

At Badab-e Surt, the shape of the hillside has been made by the springs. Mineral-rich water deposits travertine in successive layers, creating terraces and pools instead of a single channel. Orange and red tones are associated particularly with iron compounds in the water. Looking closely at the edges reveals the process more clearly than a wide view alone: each rim belongs to accumulated deposits. The site is compelling for this meeting of colour and formation. The water’s work remains readable in the contours, even without treating the pools as places to enter.
