At the Blue Mosque, surviving ornament speaks alongside damage and repair. The building belongs to the fifteenth-century Mozaffariyeh complex and became known as the “Turquoise of the Islamic World” for its lapis and turquoise tilework. A major eighteenth-century earthquake severely damaged it; fragments and later restoration now carry the visual story. Look closely at the meeting of colour, calligraphy and geometry, rather than expecting an untouched interior. The visit is rewarding precisely because the remaining detail allows you to imagine the artistic command of the original building while recognising what time has changed.
