The mountain valley near Jolfa gives St Stepanos a setting worth noticing before you reach the church. Inside the enclosing walls, pause in the courtyard and look closely at carved stone reliefs and the conical dome. Familiar Armenian architectural forms meet decorative influences shaped by the surrounding Iranian world, making this a rewarding stop for travelers interested in both craft and cultural connections. The landscape remains part of the encounter, framing the monastery beyond its walls. Since 2008, St Stepanos has belonged to UNESCO’s Armenian Monastic Ensembles of Iran, together with St Thaddeus and Dzordzor.
