At the foot of Mount Shahu, Quri Qaleh offers a view into the limestone body of the Zagros. Broad chambers and water passages contain stalactites and stalagmites, while consistently cool air helps distinguish the underground setting from the mountains outside. The halls are known by local names, but their shapes are the main reason to look closely. Compare the openness of a chamber with the passages connecting these spaces. A visit here changes the focus of a mountain journey from slopes and ridges to the forms held within the rock.
