Sanandaj Bazaar is best understood through its continuing use. Its vaulted passages and small courtyards belong to a market that developed alongside the city from Safavid times, but the spaces remain part of daily commercial and social life. Shops selling local crafts give the architecture a working purpose. Walking between the enclosed lanes and their courtyard openings lets you notice both the building and the activity it supports. This is a useful urban counterpart to Kurdistan’s mountain villages: the province’s craft traditions appear here within the routines of a functioning city market.
