Kurdistan

Terraced villages on the mountain slopes

Begin with Sanandaj’s working bazaar and mansions, then follow the province out towards Marivan and the Zagros villages. City courtyards, craft shops, oak woodland and Zarivar’s freshwater shore give the journey a changing scale, from close architectural detail to open mountain views.

Hawraman’s UNESCO-listed landscape makes the link between settlement and slope especially clear: stepped houses, stone terraces and seasonal routes belong together. Klash shoemaking, textiles, Kurdish music and local food keep the itinerary connected to people, rather than leaving the mountains as a backdrop.

Uraman Takht

Rooflines climb the Zagros slopes at Uraman Takht. Beyond the village, stone terraces and seasonal paths reveal how Hawrami communities have made a home in steep country, within a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape.

Zarivar Lake

Reeds frame the freshwater of Zarivar beside Marivan, with forested mountains behind the shore. Springs beneath the lake and melting snow sustain a setting that changes with morning mist and, in some winters, ice.

Sanandaj Bazaar

Commerce still sets the rhythm beneath Sanandaj Bazaar’s vaulted lanes. Small courtyards and local craft shops connect the city’s present-day exchanges with an urban market that grew from the Safavid period onwards.

Khosroabad Mansion

A courtyard and pool organise the view at Khosroabad, where brick decoration frames a Qajar pavilion. This Sanandaj residence and administrative complex brings the architecture of the Ardalan ruling house into close focus.

Palangan

A river threads between Palangan’s two stepped slopes. Stone roofs become courtyards for the houses above, making the village’s response to the Tangivar Valley visible in every layer of its inhabited hillside.
