Lake Urmia asks for a different kind of landscape visit: its defining feature is change. The vast hypersaline lake in northwestern Iran has islands and an ecosystem associated with brine shrimp and migratory birds, but water levels can alter its appearance dramatically. What you see is therefore a particular moment in a vulnerable environment, not a fixed view promised by a photograph. Pay attention to the relationship between water and exposed ground. The lake’s ecological story is inseparable from the visual impression, and wildlife sightings should never be assumed.
