At Qara Kelisa, differences between dark and pale stone invite a slower look at the church’s façades and carved details. The Monastery of St Thaddeus is a long-established Armenian pilgrimage place in north-western Iran, and its annual pilgrimage continues to give the buildings a living religious role. For a visitor, the interest lies in connecting the stonework with that enduring community memory rather than seeing an isolated monument. Since 2008, St Thaddeus has formed part of UNESCO’s Armenian Monastic Ensembles of Iran, alongside St Stepanos and the Chapel of Dzordzor.
