Soltaniyeh Dome
Turquoise decoration and a vast brick dome make Soltaniyeh a study in architectural ambition. Its double-shell structure brings early-fourteenth-century Ilkhanid design into focus, with an influence that reached beyond the site.

Northwest Iran, mountains and Qezel Ozan plains
Soltaniyeh’s dome and the artisans’ bazaars
Begin with Soltaniyeh’s turquoise double-shell dome for the scale and engineering of Ilkhanid architecture. In Zanjan city, Rakhtshooy Khaneh’s washing basins and the Salt Men Museum’s preserved clothing and tools tell more intimate stories about women’s daily work and ancient miners.
The bazaar adds a present-day encounter with filigree, copperware and Charooq footwear. For a change of setting, head beyond the city to Katale Khor’s limestone chambers or plan a countryside day among the Qezel Ozan and Mahneshan landscapes.

Turquoise decoration and a vast brick dome make Soltaniyeh a study in architectural ambition. Its double-shell structure brings early-fourteenth-century Ilkhanid design into focus, with an influence that reached beyond the site.
Columns, washing basins and water channels preserve a chapter of women’s everyday life in Zanjan. Rakhtshooy Khaneh turns a former communal washing place into an unusually direct encounter with social history.
Limestone formations change the scale of a journey at Katale Khor. Halls and corridors reveal stalactites, stalagmites and columns, while the visitor route shows only a portion of the cave’s layered underground extent.
Ancient clothing and tools make the Salt Men Museum more than a display of preserved bodies. In Zolfaghari Mansion, the Chehrabad finds bring the work and lives of miners into unsettlingly close focus.
Brick vaults, coloured tiles and the sound of trade give Zanjan Bazaar its texture. Follow its specialised lanes to connect the city’s craft traditions with a covered market formed in the Qajar period.
Zanjan’s crafts are closely linked to its bazaars and workshops. Alongside this working culture, the local Shabchareh custom marks Yalda night with gifts taken to the homes of newlyweds.
Rakhtshooy Khaneh, Zolfaghari Mansion and Dashkasan Temple are other historic sites, separate from Soltaniyeh’s World Heritage property.
